While it has yet to be officially announced, the next Assassin’s Creed game (which was codenamed Rift) has already been the subject of a few leaks and reports. The newest leak has now gone a bit further and revealed that it will be called Assassin’s Creed Mirage and reiterated that it will take the series back to basics.
This most recent drop came from French YouTuber j0nathan and was translated by Rebs Gaming on Twitter. The long list has many details, but it appears as only some of them are accurate. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who has had multiple reports on this game (and the series in general), chimed in and said that the title is accurate along with the other details he has previously confirmed: a spring 2023 release window, its Baghdad setting, and its return to basics. He said some parts were not accurate, like the part about it having multiple cities to explore. Insider Jeff Grubb also put in his two cents, saying that he had also heard it was called Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Given how Schreier didn’t corroborate every single thing on the list, it’s difficult to tell what parts are true and what parts aren’t. Singling out the “back to AC basics” part implies that it is taking inspiration from the first entry, but it is unclear if that also means it won’t have as many RPG mechanics.

A remake of the 2007 series debut is also on that list and it’s not the first time that it has been brought up. Some noticed that the footage from the first game that played during the anniversary stream was touched up when compared to the original trailer. The press kit for the stream also had an updated version of the game’s logo, as it now had “A Ubisoft Original” underneath the logo, which is something Ubisoft puts on new titles. The game’s anniversary site is also counting down to September and will end on the first Assassin’s Creed.
The original is backwards compatible on Xbox, but not playable on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, making it the only main entry to not be on modern, non-PC hardware. And not only has Ubisoft remastered the three games starring Ezio, the company also bundled in remasters of Assassin’s Creed III and Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey‘s season pass. If true, including an upgraded version of the first game with Mirage‘s season pass would only continue that trend, especially if the bullet point about the two sharing assets and design philosophies is also correct.
Whatever the case may be, Ubisoft will undoubtedly share more in September during its Assassin’s Creed stream and Ubisoft Forward event. The series-specific stream doesn’t have a date, but the Ubisoft Forward will air on September 10. The Assassin’s Creed stream will have the “future” of the series and will likely have more information about Mirage as well as Infinity, the confirmed live-service entry. And if they do exist, it would also be the place to speak to the rumored Origins and Odyssey crossover and remaster of the first Assassin’s Creed.
