The Ghost Recon franchise is more substantially throwing its hat into the ring of the battle royale genre with its newly announced upcoming entry, Ghost Recon Frontline. It doesn’t have a release date and is still “early” in development, but Ubisoft did note that players in Europe will be able to test out the game on PC starting on October 14, 2021, with more information on testing opportunities coming soon. The game will release on the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Stadia, Luna, and PC and will have full crossplay.

Ubisoft revealed the new title during a 20th Anniversary Showcase that premiered on Tuesday and announced it was being developed by Ubisoft Bucharest for three years. And while it will feature a variety of multiplayer game modes, the biggest one is its battle royale mode.
Called Expedition, this mode will split up 100 or so players into teams of three, and drop them onto a giant map called Drakemoor to compete against one another. On the map, players will have to collect various intel before calling for extraction from the map. Of course, this will attract other players to the area, leading to fights amongst teams looking to steal the intel. There will also be smaller and more casual gameplay modes, too, like a deathmatch arena or some sort of objective-based Domination mode.
Gunplay is supposed to be faster and more responsive, yet still tactical. Ubisoft wants players to have a lot of ways to answer problems with game’s various amounts of gear and abilities. These abilities will come from Frontline‘s three classes: Assault, Support, and Scout. They’ll all generated from a “pool of various nationalities, military origins, looks, and classes” and have different loadouts and specializations, too.

The Assault class is great for close-range fights and is an overall offense-oriented soldier. Support players have special defensive skills like shields. Scouts are built toward performing reconnaissance and can use towers to get a better vantage point. Players can hop back and forth between them during gameplay. More classes will even be added in seasonal updates.
2017’s Ghost Recon Wildlands also dabbled in battle royale with its final update as it added a Mercenaries mode with battle royale elements. However, it only supported up to eight players.
