Alan Wake Remastered Officially Announced, Coming This Fall

After months of leaks and rumors, Alan Wake Remastered has finally emerged from the shadows. Remedy Entertainment announced that the remaster of the 2010 game is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store. There’s no firm release date, as the developer only stated it was coming sometime in the fall.

There aren’t even any screen shots; the game was announced only with the above key art and nothing else. Remedy was also slim on the details. It will include both post-launch DLC episodes, but it probably won’t come with American Nightmare, the looping standalone expansion that came out in 2012, as that was not specifically mentioned.

However, the developer did note that there will be new commentary from Creative Director Sam Lake and some graphical enhancements. Lake did state that the game will be the same so don’t expect any radical gameplay improvements, but the visuals (including Alan Wake’s character model and the cutscenes) will be “updated and improved with some choice next-generation upgrades.”

Control, Remedy’s last game, was widely toted as a showpiece for powerful PCs and, eventually, the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Its supported ray tracing quite early and well, prompting Digital Foundry to call it “the ray tracing killer app.” With those upgrades on top of the other effects in the game, it’s likely that Alan Wake Remastered will borrow some of those advanced techniques (at least, on some of the systems).

Epic Games is publishing the remaster. Epic and Remedy signed a deal in March 2020 that meant Epic would be publishing two multiplatform games from the Finnish studio. The second game is unconfirmed but GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb stated that this game would be Alan Wake 2. Given the remaster of an 11-year-old-game and the AWE DLC in Control, an Alan Wake sequel seems quite probable.
