Many fans were surprised that Square Enix’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game won’t feature any multiplayer component since having a squad full of heroes lends itself naturally to cooperative play. However, now we know that there was originally a multiplayer component to the game, although further details on what that exactly entailed aren’t available.

The news comes from Simon Larouche’s LinkedIn profile. He worked from March 2017 to February 2018 on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game at developer Eidos-Montréal and was the online gameplay director for the multiplayer portion, which he noted was canceled. At some point during the game’s development, it was decided to go in a different direction and pivot to a purely solo game. Gameplay now consists of melee action and ranged gunplay as well as tactical elements, and players can order the other Guardians around and do specific attacks.
While there won’t be any multiplayer in Guardians of the Galaxy, the gameplay for the upcoming game looks impressive. It’s set to release on October 26, 2021, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
