Nintendo did not have an update on Metroid Prime 4, but it did have another Metroid game to show: Metroid Dread. Metroid Dread is a 2D entry into the series and looks like a natural follow-up from 2017’s Samus Returns. The game’s release date is October 8, 2021 for the Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo promised to show more at its Treehouse event after the show, but the somewhat lengthy trailer showed the game in action. Samus appears to have a similar set of moves to those seen in classic entries like the Morph Ball to moves like the melee counter seen in Samus Returns as well as some entirely new abilities like cloaking. The biggest new feature seems to be the enemies called E.M.M.I. These shifting robotic nuisances seem to stalk Samus like some sort Nemesis-like figure that would feel right at home in a Resident Evil game. The trailer even showed Samus firing a rocket at the beast to no effect.
There will be an amiibo pack of both the E.M.M.I. as well as Samus that will likely come out around the game’s fall release. Nintendo also announced a special edition that includes the game, steel game case, artbook, and some art cards that cover the five games in the 2D saga. The amiibo bundle will be $29.99 and the special edition will be $89.99.
