Stephenie Meyer swaps character genders in the Twilight 10th Anniversary Edition
Forget “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob,” today it’s all about “Team Edythe” and “Team Julie.” That’s right, in honor of the phenomenally popular “Twilight” novels celebrating their 10th Anniversary, author Stephenie Meyer has announced that the new edition of her first book will include a 400-page bonus feature titled Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, in which she switches the sexes of her protagonists to provide readers a fresh perspective.
“I wanted to do something fun for the 10th anniversary and the publisher wanted, like, a foreword and I thought, ‘Well, maybe something more interesting,'” Meyer told “Good Morning America” (via Yahoo).
This new version is told through the point-of-ciew of Beau, the male equivalent of Bella Swan, the heroine made famous by Kristen Stewart in the five blockbuster feature films in The Twilight Saga. Although her four books in the series have sold 150 million copies, many fans had written to Meyer concerned that Bella was nothing more than a damsel in distress.
“It’s always bothered me a little bit because anyone surrounded by superheroes is going to be…in distress. We don’t have the powers,” Meyer said. “I thought, ‘What if we switched it around a bit and see how a boy does,’ and, you know, it’s about the same. The further you get in, the more it changes because the personalities get a little bit different, but it starts out very similar and really, it really is the same story because it’s just a love story and it doesn’t matter who’s the boy and who’s the girl, it still works out.”
