Chris Farley’s Shrek Voice Finally Revealed
Before his death in December of 1997, comedian Chris Farley (Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Saturday Night Live) was the original voice for everyone’s favorite giant ogre, Shrek, in the DreamWorks Animation film. Following his passing, and despite Farley having completed the majority of his dialogue, the studio decided to replace the actor with his former “Saturday Night Live” co-star Mike Meyers, and the rest is history.
Now, the film’s development producer, John Garbett, has uploaded a story reel from the film’s early days featuring Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Farley as Shrek. You can check it out in the player below and listen to a glimpse of what might have been.
A documentary about the late comedian, I Am Chris Farley, was released just last week. You can check out the trailer for it by clicking here.
Released in May 2001, Shrek went on to gross over $480 million and win the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. It was followed by three sequels and a spin-off, which together have grossed over $3.5 billion at the global box office.
Last year, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg told the Fox Business Network that another film in the franchise would eventually be made, saying: “We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest, but I think you can be confident that well have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.”
