The following is the official description of the film:
“Screaming only makes them hungrier
This new unrated chapter of ‘Wrong Turn’ takes you to the most terrifying place of all – the bloody beginnings!
An isolated sanitarium deep in the West Virginia wilderness is deserted after an inbred family of hillbilly cannibals escape and take revenge on their captors. Decades later, a group of college students seek refuge in the now abandoned hospital after a blizzard derails their plans for a weekend winter break. But when the students encounter the medical ward’s most frightening former patients, their only choice is to fight back… or die trying!”
“Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings” is not rated.
Mini-Review:
“Wrong Turn” gets a fourth installment in this straight-to-DVD release. Let’s state the obvious – it’s not going to win any Academy Awards. And there’s nothing new here, either. A group of pretty twenty-something’s get isolated in the middle of nowhere and get hunted down and killed in a variety of ways in-between scenes of them getting nude or making uncomfortably dull dialogue. It’s just the same old thing you’ve seen a million times before.
But “Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings” isn’t entirely useless. You see, they actually shot this film in 19 days on a shoestring budget. If you’re into filmmaking, there’s a lot to learn here. You can see the tricks they used with make-up. You see how they saved money by shooting almost entirely in an old mental hospital. You get some ideas about camera setups, lighting, etc. This is the kind of low budget filmmaking that helped build the skills of directors like James Cameron, Joe Dante, and others on films for Roger Corman. So there are lessons to be learned here although you have to go through the pain of watching this movie to learn them.
I’d only recommend “Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings” to fans of B horror movies and aspiring filmmakers. Everyone else should just get their horror fix on better fare.
A few bonus features are included. There’s a commentary as well as 18 minute of deleted scenes. You also get a sample of the director’s home movies in “Director’s Die-aires.” There’s also a ‘making of’ video detailing the trials and triumphs of this 19 day shoot. “Lifestyles of the Sick and Infamous” then goes into detail about the abandoned mental hospital that they filmed in. Rounding out the bonus features is a music video featuring The Blackout City Kids.
