Mini-Review:
“The Incredibles” finally gets the Blu-ray treatment! Needless to say, the picture and sound are superb. You could still put this movie in theaters today and it would be better than 90% of the films out there. And like with the other Pixar Blu-rays, they wisely include all of the previous DVD bonus features (some now in HD) while including a few new bonus features. How are the new features? Well, they’re a bit of a mixed bag.
On the positive side, “The Incredibles Revisited” is a roundtable discussion in which Brad Bird and his crew reminisce about the making of the movie. It’s a very candid discussion where they talk about doing battle with Disney executives during pre-production, the grueling schedule, and learning how to work with each other. But they also tell all sorts of fun stories about how they made Syndrome look like Bird, how he would stamp all of the drawings with comical images, and other cool stuff. It’s an amazing peek behind the curtain. “Paths to Pixar: Story Artist” continues the series of videos educating viewers about the technical jobs behind the scenes, what they do, and how they went about getting those jobs. It’s very educational as well as entertaining. “Studio Stories” is also continued from the other Pixar DVDs and it tells how the legend of “Gary’s Birthday” got started. A batch of “Easter Eggs” are also included. They contain everything from gag animations using the Incredibles characters to an entire recreation of the movie using sock puppets. It’s a fun addition to the Blu-ray.
On the negative side, the remaining new bonus feature is “The New Nomanisan.” It’s a fake commercial showing how Syndrome’s island lair has been turned into a resort. A map pops up where you can select a variety of activities to do at this resort. They all utilize the deadly robot, goons, or hazardous features from the island for new, less nefarious purposes. It’s a fun little gag, but it’s not nearly as interesting as the other goodies.
Do the new bonus features alone make this Blu-ray worth purchasing? Probably not. But the improved picture quality, combined with the new and old bonus features, the digital copy, and a free pass to see “Cars 2” make this a valuable addition to your collection even if you already own the DVD. Overall it is well worth picking up.
