The Extras:
You’ll find the following bonus features on “The Lost Disc”:
Becoming Captain Jack This featurette highlights Johnny Depp and his Academy Award Nominated performance as Jack Sparrow. They talk about his looks, mannerisms, and inspirations for the character. If you’re a Depp fan, you’ll enjoy this short video (7:45 minutes).
Becoming Barbossa This feature discusses Geoffrey Rush and his performance as the ghost captain Barbossa. He talks about his ideas on the background of the character, how he prepared for the role, etc. You also see him training for the swordfighting, working with the monkey, and other stuff.
The Monkey’s Name Is Jack The ghost monkey is highlighted in this third feature. They talk about the challenges of training the monkey, tricks of making her perform, etc. Some of the actors and actresses are even shown making tongue in cheek comments about how the monkey was a diva. (Apparently no feces were thrown, thank goodness.)
More Fly On The Set Featurettes These are bits of clips from behind the scenes of the production. They feature Kiera Knightley walking the plank, Depp pulling her out of the water at the beginning, and the scene in the tavern. You get a sense of the fun on the set, the monotony of shooting the picture, and a feel of how the movie was made.
Pirates Around The World This shows a few clips from the film in the various language translations. It’s interesting for the first few minutes but the novelty quickly wears off.
Spirit Of The Ride Johnny Depp, Gore Verbinski, and others talk about their fondness for the ride and how it inspired the film. They also point out all the similarities between the film and the ride. Seeing as how I missed a few of the similarities in the film, I liked seeing them mentioned.
Dead Men Tell No Tales This featurette discusses the history of the Disney theme park attraction. They show vintage footage of the making of the ride as well as interviews with the surviving imagineers who built it. This was originally a DVD ROM feature on the previous DVD. I like having it here because, to be honest, I never really look at the DVD ROM features.
Sneak Attack Animatics This is the animatic of the scene where the pirates attack the ship. It’s cool to see the development of the scene.
Thar She Blows! This goes into great detail about how the ship models were made and then subsequently blown up. Star Wars effects veteran John Knoll is interviewed a lot for this.
The Bottom Line:
If you haven’t bought Pirates of the Caribbean on DVD yet, then this is the edition you’ll want to pick up. You get a lot more bonus features with this “Lost Disc”. However, if you already have it then I don’t think the stuff on this DVD makes it worth buying again. Maybe it’s worth renting, but otherwise I’d pass.
