Synopsis:

Mini-Review:
“27 Dresses” feels like the creators went to the ‘romantic movie buffet’ and pulled bits and pieces from a number of films. There are many elements similar to “Runaway Bride,” “The Wedding Singer,” “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “What Women Want,” etc. etc etc. The end result is a movie that’s occasionally entertaining but not very original.
“27 Dresses” does have some memorable moments. There’s a fun scene where Katherine Heigl models every terrible bridesmaid’s dress she has ever worn. It’s a comical display of costumes. There’s also a funny moment where Heigl and James Marsden absolutely butcher the lyrics to “Benny and the Jets.” But for each of these fun moments there are equally bad moments. The conclusion of the movie is predictable, Heigl is forced to deliver incredibly cheesy “serious” dialogue, and it ultimately doesn’t bring anything new to the romantic movie genre.
All that being said, the cast deliver otherwise good performances. Katherine Heigl proves yet again that she can handle comedy more than well. She’s beautiful without being threatening to women, funny without making it seem forced, and overall likeable. It’s a successful combination. James Marsden is also impressive as Kevin Doyle.
If you’re a fan of romantic comedies then you’re probably going to be a whole lot more forgiving of “27 Dresses” than I was. And anyone that’s ever felt they were always a bridesmaid and never a bride will enjoy it, too.
There’ a decent selection of bonus features on this DVD. Among the Deleted Scenes you’ll find a scene where Tess chooses her bridesmaids’ dresses. You’ll also find featurettes on the creation of the hideous bridesmaids dresses and a general ‘making of’ featurette. Another notable extra shows the real world “running of the brides” at a wedding dress sale. You’re in the trenches as the women blitz for the bargains.
