Synopsis:
The following is from the DVD cover:
“The story centers on a rag-tag team of Reno cops that are called in to save the day after a terrorist attack disrupts a national police convention in Miami Beach during spring break. They’re not the best, but that’s all we got. Based on the successful Comedy Central TV series.”
“Reno 911!: Miami (Unrated) is not rated. The theatrical version was rated R for sexual content, nudity, crude humor, language and drug use.
Mini-Review:
If I had to describe “Reno 911!” to the uninitiated, I’d say it was a cross between “COPS” and “Police Academy.” And the good news is you don’t have to be familiar with the TV series to follow the film. Despite this, fans of the TV show will probably be very happy to see the creators cut loose on the big screen.
Like the TV series, the film a series of skits featuring our inept heroes going from one police call to the next. They’re all tied together by the situation that all the police in Miami are quarantined in a hotel at a convention. The humor is overall pretty lowbrow, but I have to admit that I laughed at a lot of it. For example, a couple of the police stop at a call about an alligator in a pool. The result when a ‘helpful’ neighbor joins in is pretty hilarious. Another scene shows our heroes attempting to handle a noise complaint at a gangsta rap party.
I think one of the things I enjoyed most about the film were the series of cameos sprinkled here and there. In an early scene, The Rock attempts to take charge of the desperate situation. You can imagine how that goes. I was also pleased to see Paul Rudd as Ethan the Druglord. He attempts to act like Scarface, but he has a rather amusing backstory that is revealed at the end. Look for other hilarious cameos by Patton Oswalt as Jeff Spoder, David Koechner as the Sheriff of Aspen, Mindy Sterling as Spoder’s Mom, and Paul Reubens as Sir Terrence.
This film is better than “Police Academy,” but if you like cop humor or lowbrow humor, “Reno 911!” is definitely for you.
There are a ton of bonus features included on this DVD. There are three commentaries including some with the cast in and out of character. Included among the extended scenes is a significantly longer ‘beached whale’ scene. Public Service Announcements are also included. These feature our cops rather poorly acting their way through commercials about cell phones in theaters, talking during movies, etc. Rounding things out is the featurette “Fox Movie Channel Presents: ‘Reno 911!: Miami’ – World Premiere”. It shows the cops, in character, appearing at the premiere of the film.
