Mini-Review:

If you’re a fan of the TV series “Miami Vice” then you may be disappointed to find out that the movie has little to do with the show. Besides featuring white and black cops, fast boats, hip music, and a Miami location, this movie has no real connection with the TV series. Actually, it is written and directed by Michael Mann, so it has that in common, but little else.

Unfortunately, I was quite bored by “Miami Vice.” I found the story to be slow and uninteresting. I never really cared about the characters. As much as I like Colin Farell and Jamie Foxx, I didn’t like either of them in their respective roles. Their performances consisted of mainly looking cool and acting tough. I particularly didn’t buy the romance between Sonny and Isabella. Why would the wife of a drug kingpin fall for a slimy supposed drug runner? His charming moustache?

“Miami Vice” was hailed as another great Michael Mann crime drama, but it honestly didn’t do anything for me. I didn’t see the theatrical version, so I can’t compare it to this unrated version. But I’d suspect that this version has a bit more blood and nipples than the original.

As for the DVD bonus features, there’s a pretty good selection. “Miami Vice Undercover” discusses the script and the idea that this was a story about cops going deep undercover. “Miami & Beyond: Shooting on Location” details how they shot in Paraguay in hazardous and real conditions. “Visualizing Miami Vice” talks about Michael Mann’s detailed pre-production process using location photos. Then there’s a batch of Behind the Scenes Featurettes that cover real undercover agents, firearm training for the actors, the fast boat used in the film, and other cool stuff. You also see how real undercover agents tricked Colin Farrell into thinking he was on a real undercover drug deal. The bonus features are rounded out by a Feature Commentary with writer/director Michael Mann.
