“The swamp is my world. It is who I am. It is what I am. I was once a man, I know the evil men do. Do not bring your evil here. I warned you. Beware the wrath of Swamp Thing!” Actor Dick Durock recited those lines in the opening credits of the first live-action Swamp Thing TV series in 1990. Now, DC Universe may have found Durock’s successor as Swamp Thing for its new original series.
Splash Report and Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Derek Mears has been cast as Swamp Thing for DC Universe’s upcoming show. The report is currently unconfirmed by DC Universe, but Mears has extensive experience performing in heavy makeup and prosthetics. Mears played Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th reboot, as well as numerous creatures in Sleepy Hollow, Men in Black II, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and more.

Bloody Disgusting’s report suggests that Mears will not be portraying Swamp Thing’s human self, Dr. Alec Holland. However, if the report is accurate, Mears will be carrying the series as the titular creature. Former Teen Wolf and Gotham star Crystal Reed was recently cast as Abigail Arcane, the female lead of this series. In the show, Abigail is a researcher who bonds with Alec while investigating “a deadly swamp-borne virus.” After Alec’s apparent demise, he is reborn as the Swamp Thing and the defender of the green before reuniting with Abigail.
DC Universe will premiere Swamp Thing season 1 in 2019.
