Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has been providing constant entertainment for fans for over twenty years. It was inevitable that Luffy’s journey to become the Pirate King and find the One Piece would be anything but easy. However, the anime pairs his long-term goal with some incredible milestones, which help make the wait all the more worthwhile.
Among the numerous milestones he achieved, Luffy becoming Emperor of the Sea was the biggest one. Luffy was announced as the fifth Emperor of the Sea after he clashed with Big Mom in episode 878. However, after defeating Kaido, the World Government recognized Luffy as an emperor in episode 1093.
When does Luffy become an emperor?
One of the most riveting moments in One Piece was Luffy becoming one of the Four Emperors. From the beginning, the Four Emperors were pirates who were given complete freedom to rule the sea as they saw fit, meaning earning the coveted title was no easy feat. However, what truly impressed the fans was the manner in which he obtained the title.
The Whole Cake Island arc featured some incredible scenes, showing Luffy taking himself to the limit on multiple occasions. Notably, his fight against Katakuri remains one of the most jaw-dropping fights in the series. Despite not clashing with Big Mom in the arc, his ability to attack one of the emperors and get out nearly unscathed earned him the title of fifth Emperor of the Sea.
While the title wasn’t officially given, Luffy had catapulted himself as one of the frontrunners to become a Yonko. After defeating Kaido, who was regarded as the strongest beast, the World Government had no choice but to acknowledge him as an emperor. Although being an emperor wasn’t Luffy’s goal, it was a giant leap forward to securing his long-term goal.
