After a series of major revelations in The Apothecary Diaries episode 19, fans finally know the truth behind Jinshi’s identity. Additionally, the episode takes a mild dive into Lakan’s intentions towards his biological daughter, Maomao. But, as fans suspect, the question is, does Maomao die in the chaos that The Apothecary Diaries episode 19 brings?
In the episode, Lihaku reveals a series of events, most of which Maomao already knew about. As Maomao dives into the mysteries, she understands that, though it is strange, most of those events could be connected. Additionally, having encountered Suirei in the previous episode, Moamao suspects her to be behind most of the events.
However, remembering her father’s advice, she refuses to speak based on conjecture. Moreover, Maomao believes that the events could be purely coincidental and seems disinterested in working on the case.
Jinshi, who was, up until then, shown to viewers as an eunuch, lures Maomao to work on the case, using an Ox bezoar as bait. He promises the medicinal item as a reward if Maomao agrees to investigate further. Naturally, Maomao, now driven by the potential reward, fully invests herself in the case.
After going through the archives, connecting the dots, and talking to the demoted official in the room consisting of archives, it suddenly dawns upon Maomao that something is quite fishy. She also figures out that the life of the royal member performing the ceremony that day is at risk. Upon solving this mystery, she runs toward the ceremonial hall without delay.
Did Maomao die while saving Jinshi?
As soon as Maomao reaches the ceremonial hall, a guard stops her. He questions her authority to take a step as huge as interjecting a royal ceremony. Though Maomao agrees with him, she keeps up her fight. Maomao’s boldness triggers the guard, who launches a hard blow with his wooden baton to her face. Following this hit, she tumbles down the stairs and almost loses consciousness as blood oozes out of her mouth.
As she struggles to keep herself conscious, Maomao gets up and does not stop fighting. She risks her life to save the life of an unknown person behind the royal doors. Finally, Lakan arrives at the spot. He defends Maomao, which allows her to run past the guard. Right as she enters, the ceiling is about to fall on the royal person. Fortunately, Maomao pushes them just in time, thereby saving their life.
However, Maomao ends up being gravely injured. She looks up to find out that the royal person she had just saved the life of was none other than Master Jinshi. Shortly, she loses consciousness, but contrary to fans’ suspicion, Maomao does not die.
Finally, Jinshi carries her outside, where Lakan is shown wearing a shocked look on his face. This confirms either of the two things – Lakan is genuinely concerned for Maomao, or he is behind this grand orchestration and is surprised that Maomao even had it in her to save Jinshi. The truth, however, will only be revealed in the upcoming episodes.
