One of the most significant plot points in the Naruto franchise is when Kakashi Hatake gets his Sharingan. During the Third Great Ninja War, which is one of the series’ best story arcs, Kakashi acquires his Sharingan from his teammate. Alongside Rin Nohara and Obito Uchiha, Kakashi trained under Minato Namikaze.
However, due to unfortunate circumstances, as Obito struggled with death, he selflessly decided to give away one of his Sharingans to Kakashi. Utilizing the powers of the dojutsu, or ocular jutsu, the silver-haired shinobi went so far as to employ Susanoo, despite not being an Uchiha. However, there came a time during the Fourth Great Ninja War when he lost the Sharingan and its powers for good. As such, the question remains: How and why did Kakashi lose his Sharingan in Naruto?
To know the answer, one has to go back to the time when Kakashi, Obito, Might Guy, Rock Lee, Minato, and Gaara’s combined their efforts to neutralize Madara Uchiha during the war. Soon after, the Ghost of the Uchiha, Madara, brutally snatched away the Sharingan that Obito lent to Kakashi.
However, Naruto and Obito, using their Six Paths chakra powers, healed Kakashi’s Sharingan. But this was a temporary effect. During the battle against Kaguya, Obito used Kamui to sacrifice himself and save Kakashi from Kaguya’s attacks. Since he finally succumbed to death, it left Kakashi with no Sharingan. This was because the powers of the ocular jutsu dissipated with the vanishing of its rightful wielder.
Does Kakashi ever get his Sharingan back?
In addition to why the Copy Ninja lost his Sharingan in Naruto, another question is if Kakashi ever got his Sharingan back. As suggested in the earlier paragraphs, the answer is no. Though there is a lot of confusion about this, Kakashi did not get his Sharingan back.
The silver-haired shinobi briefly used the healed Sharingan to employ techniques, such as Kamui, but he could not do it for long. Once Obito died, it left Kakashi without Sharingan. However, it is remarkable that fans witnessed Kakashi’s growth despite the lack of the ocular jutsu. Later in Naruto Shippuden, he went on to become the Sixth Hokage and excelled at it because of his vast knowledge of all kinds of jutsu, which he acquired over the years.
Moreover, the Copy Ninja’s abilities get enhanced along with his chakra. With great powers and strategic brilliance, it is no wonder Kakashi Hatake became one of the most skilled and respected ninjas in the history of Konohagakure and, by extension, Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto-verse.
