GKIDS announced that it has acquired the North American distribution rights for the 1990 animated series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and will be delivering the anime on home video later this year.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion), the sci-fi adventure anime will get a home video release based on a new 4K restoration of the film. No official release date for the home video version of the film was given, but fans can expect it sometime later this year. The series was created by NHK, Toho, and Korad, and also stemmed from a concept from the legendary director and animator Hayao Miyazaki.
“It’s 1889 and people from around the globe are flocking to Paris to see scientific achievements at the Exposition Universelle despite rumors of dangers lurking in the oceans,” reads the official synopsis for the series. “While attending the fair, teenaged inventor Jean meets Nadia, a mysterious girl who possesses a highly sought-after crystal called Blue Water. Pursued by nefarious forces, the pair journey by sea and by sky to escape their would-be captors and to discover the secret of the crystal.”

Since its original release, the anime has been re-licensed a handful of times and was also rereleased on Blu-ray and DVD in 2014.
