Students are subjected to intense challenges on Academy Island. Liar Liar sets up the foundation for the series, which features high school students competing against each other to claim the coveted title of Seven Star.
Anime in which high school students face challenges or compete for a specific title has become quite popular now. This genre wasn’t well known a decade ago. With that being said, Liar Liar’s interesting premise leaves fans asking for more series that might mirror it in some way or the other. So here are five shows that are similar to the above-mentioned series in certain aspects.
Classroom of the Elite
If there is another series out there that is eerily similar to Liar Liar, then it is Classroom of the Elite. The premise of the story is similar, as it takes place in an elite school to be the first to kill their teacher. The hierarchy of their ranking decides their fate in the academy. Moreover, they both have psychological themes that add layers of intrigue.
Kiyotaka Ayanokoji is the protagonist of this series, and he prefers not to attract unwanted attention. He is quite overpowered but decides to keep his actual abilities hidden, mirroring the twist in Liar Liar.
No Game No Life
This series revolves around Blank, a sibling duo. Sora and Shiro might be weak on their own. However, with their wits combined, they’re a force to reckon with. From card games to board games to physical games, there is nothing these two can solve. They get transported to another world, Disboard, where disputes are settled over a bout of game. This duo must overcome the challenges that are thrown at them.
Tomodachi Game
Tomodachi Game is an excellent psychological thriller. A friend group is forcefully made to participate in a game that puts their trust, loyalty, and bond at stake. With each passing challenge, desperation and agitation rise within them. These challenges are presented to them as a way of escaping their debt of twenty million yen. It is similar to Liar Liar in certain aspects, such as high school students engaging in challenges and characters having a mysterious past.
The World God Only Knows
The story revolves around Keima Katsuragi, who is obsessed with playing dating simulators. Ironically, he doesn’t interact with any real-life girls. His life tumbles down when he stumbles upon a demon from hell, Elsie.
With knowledge of conquering just 2D girls, how will the protagonist survive this turmoil? Bound by a contract to hell, he must capture the loose souls that are residing within girls (vessels) around him. The only way to liberate these negative entities is to make the young girl fall in love with himself.
Talentless Nana
A rather simple-paced plot becomes completely mind-bending. Talentless Nana will keep you hooked, and the twists will make you guess what is going to happen next. It is pretty similar to Liar Liar, which involves manipulation, analysis, and deceit, all within the confines of a school setting.
Teenagers with special abilities are called Talents in this world. They’re taken to a remote island to train their supernatural powers. However, Nanao has no Talent and is ostracised by his classmates. Furthermore, mysterious disappearances start taking place, and the plot gets intense.
