After a few weeks of respite following the Golden Globes, awards season kicked back into high gear with a weekend where both the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) would announce their prestigious industry awards. Last night, the PGA announced its winners and Ben Affleck’s period suspense thriller Argo continued its awards season streak as it took the producers’ top honor, the Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Picture.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wreck-It Ralph won the respective award for Animated Theatrical Motion Picture, while Searching for Sugar Man took the PGA’s award for Documentary.
As far as the television, the Showtime series “Homeland” took the Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Epic Television, Drama, also continuing its winning streak. ABC’s “Modern Family” won the respective award for comedy, while HBO’s “Game Change” was honored by the PGA as television mini-series.
The last five PGA winners in the feature film category went on to win Best Picture on Oscar night, which ups the chances of Ben Affleck’s popular third feature to continue its current run of wins. In theory, the SAG Ensemble award could still go to another movie and Argo would still be considered a frontrunner especially if the Directors Guild (DGA) also honors Affleck for his direction.

In 1990, the Producers Guild held the first-ever Golden Laurel Awards, which were renamed the Producers Guild Awards in 2002. Richard Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck took home the award for Best Produced Motion Picture for DRIVING MISS DAISY, establishing the Guilds awards as a bellwether for the Oscars. Last year, the PGA awarded THE ARTIST with its Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, marking the fifth consecutive year the Producers Guild has presaged the Motion Picture Academys choice.
