Following the success of Crazy Rich Asians, Deadline reports that New Line Cinema has confirmed has picked up the rights to the original screenplay Singles Day. The romantic comedy was written by Lillian Yu.
Singles Day is a Chinese-centric romantic comedy that will be based around an actual Chinese holiday that is celebrated every year on the eleventh day of November (With the date 11-11 harkening to the single status of those celebrating). The holiday is considered as the anti-Valentine’s Day which originated at Nanjing University in 1993. Singles’ Day or National Singles’ Day is mostly enjoyed by young people.
The proposed idea for the project is to have a multiple-storyline concept. The producers of the film will be Chris Bender (Just Friends, We’re the Millers) and Jake Weiner for Good Fear.
Singles Day won’t be the first time that New Line will produce a movie that is centered around a holiday. They have also produced such films like: Valentine’s Day starring Julia Roberts, Kathy Bates, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Bradley Cooper and more; and New Year’s Eve which stars Halle Berry, Bon Jovi, Zac Efron, Sarah Jessica Parker, Robert De Niro and more.
Yu graduated from Harvard and has worked as a staff writer on NBC’s Powerless. The young writer recently worked in the writers room in Jonathan Tropper’s upcoming action series Warrior that is being produced by Justin Lin.
