Warner Bros. to develop a Supergirl movie

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films are in the process of developing a movie that will center around Superman’s cousin, Supergirl. 22 Jump Street writer Oren Uziel has been brought on to pen the film’s script.

In the pages of DC comics, Supergirl and Superman are the only ones who safely escaped their doomed planet of Krypton, both landing on Earth but with Superman beating her to the planet by a number of years (thus the age difference). Because they’re both from the same planet, Supergirl and Superman have a similar power set and the same vulnerability to Kryptonite.

There is no official word yet on who’s going to be the director of the Supergirl film, but the outlet says the studio will likely seek out a female director. It’s also unclear if Henry Cavill’s Superman will make an appearance in the film.

Supergirl currently has her own television series on CW which stars Melissa Benoist as the title character and hailing from executive producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller. A previous Supergirl movie was produced back in 1984 with Helen Slater playing the title role. The infamous film performed poorly at the box office and received blistering reviews.
