The long-gestating Spy Hunter movie looks to have a new director in the form of Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less helmer Ruben Fleischer. Vulture reports that Fleischer is reteaming with Warner Bros. Pictures on the big screen adaptation following his work on the studio’s Gangster Squad, opening in theaters in January.
The project was previously set up at Universal, where John Woo and Paul W.S. Anderson were attached to direct at various points and Dwayne Johnson was attached to star.
The site says that, while there have been many writers who have tried to tackle the video game adaptation, Fleischer will be seeking new screenwriters to execute his take.
The film would be based on Midway Games’ popular arcade game of the 1980s. The story follows a highly-trained spy hunter whose job it is to eliminate rogue spies when they become liabilities to their governments.
