Focus Features and Working Title have announced that their historical drama Mary, Queen of Scots has begun shooting. The film stars Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) as Mary and Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) as Queen Elizabeth I, alongside Jack Lowden (Dunkirk) as Lord Darnley and Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk) as Robert Dudley.
Crowned Queen of Scotland when she was less than a year old, the 16th century leader was, later in life, forced to abdicate her throne and was executed at age 44 for her alleged involvement with an assassination attempt on the life of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I, whose life story was told in Hirst’s screenplays for Elizabeth and Elizabeth: The Golden Age. In the latter film, Mary herself was played by Samantha Morton.
Originally scripted by Hirst, Mary, Queen of Scots will be directed by Josie Rourke from a screenplay by Beau Willimon. Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin are producing.
