Still without an official title, the narrative film is based on Jeff Malmberg’s 2010 documentary Marwencol. Marwencol tells the true story of Mark Hogancamp, a man who, after being nearly beaten to death, fell into a nine-day coma. When he finally awoke, his memory was gone. As a means of therapy, he built Marwencol, a 1:6 scale fantasy world with dolls crafted in the images of himself and those around him.
The cast of the narrative Marewencol also includes Leslie Mann, Janelle Monae and Eiza Gonzalez. Caroline Thompson, best known for scripting Edward Scissorhands, is cowriting the screenplay with Zemeckis. Both Thompson and Zemeckis will produce through ImageMovers with Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey and Cherylanne Martin.
Gwendoline Christie, who recently starred on Jane Campion and Gerard Lee’s mystery series Top of the Lake, will return as Captain Phasma in the highly-anticipated Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Directed by Rian Johnson, the film hits theaters December 15. She’s also slated to play a role in the upcoming sci-fi feature Darkest Minds, based on the YA series by Alexandra Bracken.
