According to Deadline, Netflix is teaming up with acclaimed genre director Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil), Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV and Paramount TV to make a series based on Shirley Jackson’s classic 1959 novel “The Haunting of Hill House.” The streaming giant has given a direct-to-series order for the untitled Haunting series, which will consist of 10 episodes.

Not to be confused with The Legend of Hell House or The House on Haunted Hill, Jackson’s novel centers on a paranormal investigator who invites two women who have past experience with the supernatural to spend time in a supposedly haunted house, where even the hired help won’t stay at night. Spooky shenanigans ensue in what has been called one of the (if not THE) definitive haunted house books ever written.
Robert Wise directed the landmark 1963 film version The Haunting, starring Julie Harris, which is noted for its intense atmosphere of psychological terror. A widely-panned remake for Spielberg’s Dreamworks Pictures was released in 1999, direct by Jan de Bont and starring Liam Neeson and Lili Taylor and featuring laughable CGI. Stephen King also used the novel as the main inspiration for his 2002 TV miniseries Rose Red, which was originally developed with… Steven Spielberg. Starting to see a pattern?
Dubbed a “reimagining” of the novel, the Haunting series will be written, directed and executive produced by Flanagan. His producing partner Trevor Macy will also executive produce alongside Amblin TV’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.
Flanagan is currently in post-production on his feature adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Gerald’s Game for Netflix, which will star Carla Gugino and Brice Greenwood.
