Javier Bardem is up for the voice role as the lead villain in Despicable Me 2, says a story at The Hollywood Reporter.
Bardem would play the elder half of a father/son duo, called El Macho and Machito, respectively. Further details about the plot of the sequel have yet to be revealed.
Despicable Me 2 will follow up the world introduced in the hit 2010 film, which has grossed nearly $550 million worldwide. Steve Carell is expected to return as Gru with the rest of the original cast (which included Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Kristen Wiig, Julie Andrews and more) likely back as well.
Bardem recently finished production on The Bop Decameron, which reunites him with writer/director Woody Allen. He’s soon set to begin work on the as-of-yet-untitled 23rd James Bond film.
Despicable Me 2 should hit theaters on July 3, 2013.
