Robert Patrick has signed to join the cast of Ruben Fleischer’s Gangster Squad, Variety reports. He will take over the part of Officer Max Kennard, which had been rumored to go to Bryan Cranston.
Adapted from a series of L.A. Times articles, Gangster Squad explores the true story of a band of secret “off the record” police task force who went after Meyer Harris “Mickey” Cohen, a high-profile gangster who was a member of the “Jewish Mafia” in the 1940’s.
Patrick will be joining Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Holt McCallany and, still in negotiations, Emma Stone, in the crime drama.
Though no reason has been given for Cranston not signing on, it likely has to do with a busy schedule. In addition to his leading role on “Breaking Bad,” Cranston will appear in some major upcoming projects, including John Carter and Total Recall.
