Michael Bay’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon continued its worldwide box office domination this weekend, adding another $47 million domestically and $93 million overseas. In North America, the Paramount Pictures release has earned $261 million and internationally it is up to $384 million, for a massive worldwide total of $645 million after less than two weeks in theaters. The sequel, which cost a reported $195 million to make, has passed up The Hangover Part II ($250.8 million) to become the top grossing domestic film so far this year.
At the North American box office, New Line’s R-rated comedy Horrible Bosses opened in second place with an estimated $28.1 million from 3,040 theaters, an average of $9,247 per location. Directed by Seth Gordon, the $35 million-budgeted film stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, Julie Bowen and Jamie Foxx.
Columbia Pictures’ Zookeeper, starring Kevin James, Rosario Dawson and Leslie Bibb, debuted in the third spot with $21 million from 3,482 theaters, averaging $6,031 per site. Internationally, the film brought in $7.5 million for a worldwide total of $28.5 million. The comedy was budgeted at $80 million.
Pixar’s Cars 2 dropped two spots to fourth its third weekend with $15.2 million. The sequel has collected $148.8 million domestically and $121.6 million overseas for a worldwide total of $270.4 million. The film cost about $200 million to make.
Columbia’s Bad Teacher rounded out the top five, collecting $9 million its third weekend for a total of $78.8 million. The comedy is said to have cost $20 million.
