Columbia Pictures has plans to adapt Hitoshi Matsumoto’s Big Man Japan for Western audiences, the studio announced today.
To be based on the 2007 original, the American version will be produced by Neal Moritz with Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (Clash of the Titans, Crazy/Beautiful and the upcoming R.I.P.D.) attached to write the screenplay.
The original film starred Matsumoto (who also wrote and directed) and is officially described as follows:
Set in a world where monsters wreak havoc, theres one man who can protect the citizenry: Big Man Japan, who runs the Department of Monster Prevention. Using electricity, he can grow to be 10 stories tall and fight off the most menacing of monsters. The problem is that hes not very good at his job and often causes as much damage as he prevents. The people believe hes a joke and not nearly as good at the job as his father and grandfather were before he took over the family business.
No director is currently attached to the remake, but check back for details on the project as they become available.
