Suicide Squad opened in first place domestically with an estimated $135.1 million from 4,255 theaters, an average of $31,752 per location. The opening marks the biggest ever for the month of August, surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy‘s $94.3 million from 2014. Suicide Squad also holds the largest August Thursday preshow of $20.5 million. $11 million of the weekend total came from 382 IMAX theaters, where the film averaged $28,871 per location. Suicide Squad earned $65.3 million on Friday, took a 41% drop on Saturday with $38.8 million, and added $31 million on Sunday. Those are the highest Friday, Saturday and Sunday numbers for the month of August ever. The Warner Bros. release received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences, ahead of Batman v Superman‘s B score.
Suicide Squad also dominated the international marketplace, earning $132 million from 17,670 screens in 57 territories over its first five days, for a worldwide total of $267.1 million. The IMAX global take was $19.2 million, which surpassed the company’s previous best August opener Guardians of the Galaxy ($15.9 million). Internationally, the film marks the biggest August opening ever, the all-time biggest opening for an IMAX film with $7.2 million, the 2nd biggest DC opening of all-time, and the 5th biggest Warner Bros. opening of all time.
The comic book adaptation, which cost about $175 million to make, stars Will Smith (Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness), Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus), Joel Kinnaman (Netflix’s “House of Cards”), Viola Davis (The Help, Doubt), Jai Courtney (Insurgent), Jay Hernandez (Takers), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Thor: The Dark World), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors), Scott Eastwood (Fury), Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns), Adam Beach (Cowboys & Aliens), and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. Written and directed by David Ayer and based on the characters from DC Comics, the film was produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.
In North America, Universal Pictures’ Jason Bourne dropped to second place with $22.7 million and has grossed $103.4 million after two weeks. The film has also earned $91.9 million overseas for a global total of $195.3 million. Directed by Paul Greengrass, the film stars Matt Damon, Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel and Tommy Lee Jones. It fifth installment of the franchise was produced for $120 million.
STX Entertainment’s Bad Moms remained in third place and added $14.2 million its second weekend for a total of $51 million. Made for just $20 million, the R-rated comedy was written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. Bad Moms stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Annie Mumolo, Jada Pinkett Smith and Christina Applegate.
Also keeping its fourth spot was llumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life of Pets, the fifth fully-animated feature-film collaboration with Universal, which grossed $11.6 million its fifth week for a domestic total of $319.6 million. Internationally, the animated hit has brought in $182.6 million for a worldwide sum of $502.2 million. Made for $75 million, The Secret Life of Pets was directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2) and co-directed by Yarrow Cheney and written by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch. The movie stars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart in their animated feature-film debuts, with co-stars Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks.
Dropping three spots to fifth was Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond with $10.2 million and $127.9 million domestically after three weeks. Internationally, the third installment in the current film series has earned $66.5 million for a worldwide total of $194.4 million. Made for $185 million, the Justin Lin-directed film stars Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, and Idris Elba. The previous film, Star Trek Into Darkness, earned $228.8 million domestically and $238.6 million overseas in 2013 for a worldwide total of $467.4 million.
Moviegoers were not very interested seeing EuropaCorp’s new comedy Nine Lives, as the Barry Sonnenfeld-directed film grossed just $6.5 million from 2,264 theaters in sixth place. Receiving a B+ CinemaScore from audiences, Nine Lives stars Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Garner, Malina Weissman, Cheryl Hines, Christopher Walken and Robbie Amell.
Also, the James Wan-produced Lights Out (New Line) added $6 million in seventh its third weekend for a total of $54.7 million. The movie cost less than $5 million to make.
