Image Entertainment has just announced that the ensemble indie thriller, Passion Play will received a limited theatrical release on May 6th in New York and LA. Featuring an ensemble cast headlined by Bill Murray, Megan Fox and Mickey Rourke (and more), the film was originated slated to head direct to DVD. That release is still currently planned to hit on May 31st.
The official press release for the theatrical run is as follows:
On May 6th, Image Entertainment launches Passion Play, a daring, seductive thriller that spans from film noir’s shadowy depths to the bright hope of redemption. Written and directed by Mitch Glazer (screenwriter of The Recruit and Scrooged), the film boasts a heavenly cast including Academy Award® nominees Mickey Rourke and Bill Murray, Megan Fox, Rhys Ifans, Kelly Lynch and former UFC sensation, Chuck Liddell. The film made its debut this past fall at the Toronto International Film Festival. Passion Play will begin its theatrical roll-out in New York and Los Angeles and will follow with a platform release strategy.
Nate Poole (Rourke, The Wrestler, Iron Man 2) is a washed-up jazz musician fleeing from trigger-happy gangster Happy Shannon (Murray, Lost In Translation). While on the run, Nate stumbles across a traveling carnival, and is instantly mesmerized by the carnival’s prized attraction, Lily “The Bird Woman” (Fox, Transformers). But Lily is no carny fake: her wings are real. The fugitive musician falls in love with this angelic creature, and he convinces her to leave with him, to the anger of her ruthless employer (Ifans, Notting Hill). The two flee across the desert, but towards… what? Their destruction? Their salvation?
Combining realism and myth, Passion Play is a portrait of humanity at its best and worst. Gritty and hard-boiled, it is also an adult fairytale that promises hope in the most unlikely of places.
