Shock Video: Arnold Schwarzenegger & Joely Richardson on Zombie Drama, Maggie

As a whole, Maggie is unexpected. A tender zombie drama, the film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger in one of his most dramatic roles. He wears it well. The stoic, often unstoppable hero of so much action instead transmits a somber, unstoppable will here, defying rationale to care for his transforming daughter. Alongside the superstar is Joely Richardson, whose role proves even more complex in some ways. As Maggie’s stepmother, Richardson must play the conflict of great care and great fear, torn between family and the worry of harboring someone that’s increasingly dangerous.

Behind them is the golden aesthetic of director Henry Hobson and DP Lukas Ettlin, who portray a post-apocalyptic U.S. as simply reverting to a dusty Americana. It’s a lot to talk about, which is a shame as Shock only had a few minutes with stars Schwarzenegger and Richardson.

Below, find our brief chat about Maggie, its existence in zombie film, its look and its more tender notes. Maggie, about a father caring for his rapidly deteriorating daughter, is in theaters and on VOD May 8th. For more, see Shock’s review of the film here.
