A World Premiere at last summers 71st Venice International Film Festival, Joe Dantes Burying the Ex is the legendary filmmakers first feature since 2009 and the latest in a line of resurrected ex horror-comedies.
Joining last years Life After Beth and last months SXSW premiere, Nina Forever, Burying the Ex follows Max (Anton Yelchin), an all-around nice guy, and his overbearing but incredibly beautiful girlfriend, Evelyn (Ashley Greene). Their relationship takes a nosedive after they decide to move in together and Evelyn turns out to be a controlling, manipulative nightmare. Max realizes its time to call it quits, but theres just one problem: hes too afraid to break up with her. Fate steps in when Evelyn is involved in a freak accident and dies, leaving Max single and ready to mingle. Several weeks later, he has a chance encounter with Olivia (Alexandra Daddario), a cute and spirited girl who just might be his soul mate. But that same night, Evelyn returns from the grave as a dirt-smeared Zombie and shes determined to live happily ever after with Max
Though this international trailer for Burying the Ex is a bit unfortunate (dig that Apatow red font), the prospect of a new Dante horror-comedy is too exciting to be dragged down. Im certainly curious about this new little crop of films, too. Though the character of a browbeaten nice guy boyfriend is certainly nothing new, films like Burying and the aforementioned titles seem rooted in the present climate of our pasts being inescapable thanks to social media.
