The first installment, Interview with the Vampire was made into a film in ’94 starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. A second film followed, The Queen of the Damned, in 2002 with Aaliyah playing the eponymous bloodsucker and Stuart Townsend playing the vampire Lestat.
What does this mean for the series now that Universal and Imagine have picked up the properties? It looks like we’re going to get new adaptations. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are locked in to produce the new films.
The Tale of the Body Thief film was building buzz a few years back when Imagine bought that script. It seemed odd to me that they would just jump into the middle of the series like that so many years after Queen of the Damned‘s release.
This “let’s just start over” approach feels more apropos for Hollywood.
The next chapter in the Vampire Chronicles series, “Prince Lestat,” hits bookstores this fall.
