Paramount Pictures’ romantic comedy No Strings Attached, starring Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, opened in first place at the domestic box office with an estimated $20.3 million from 3,018 locations. Made for about $25 million, the Ivan Reitman-directed film averaged $6,726 per theater. The R-rated pic received 70% of its opening gross from females, the studio said.
Sony’s The Green Hornet dropped to second and a respectable 46% its second weekend. The action adventure added $18.1 million for a total of $63.4 million so far. Internationally, The Green Hornet topped the box office with $18.7 million from 4,775 theaters in 45 markets. The film has now earned $37.4 million overseas. The production was budgeted at $120 million.
Universal’s The Dilemma also dropped a spot to third and a smaller 45.4% in ticket sales. The $70 million comedy earned $9.7 million to bring its two-week total to $33.4 million.
Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech remained in fourth place with $9.2 million its ninth weekend in theaters. Starring Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, the $15 million drama has collected $58.6 million for The Weinstein Company.
Paramount’s True Grit rounded out the top five with $8 million for a total of $138.6 million after five weeks. Not bad for a film that cost only $38 million to make.
Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan brought in $6.2 million in the sixth spot and has earned $83.6 million in eight weeks. Starring Natalie Portman, the film was made for just $13 million.
In limited release, Peter Weir’s The Way Back debuted with $1.5 million from 650 theaters, an average of $2,254 per site, while John Wells’ The Company Men opened to $767,000 from 106 theaters, an average of $7,236. IFC Films also released The Housemaid in two theaters, where it earned $18,200.
