Actor on his role as a bloodsucker
The vampire lore may be kinder and gentler thanks to the Twilight saga and even True Blood, but in Underworld: Awakening no one is going to be sparkling.
“Vampires can be hard mother f***ers,” Theo James said during the press event for Awakening during Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego. “They are cool and they are dark and exist on a visceral, animalistic level. They suck blood and shit. There won’t be any kissing of spooning.”
James plays David, a vampire from a very old coven but represents a younger generation of vampires.
“He’s at loggerheads with his father, who believes the only way to survive against humans is to take a step back into the shadows,” James said. “My character wants to tip the balance back in favor of the vampires.”
In Underworld: Awakening, opening January 20, 2012, the humans have figured out about the vampire race and have become efficient about killing them, James said. So one school of thought is to retreat, the other is to fight back.
James said he is bringing a more moral complexity to the vampire character than what we have maybe not seen in the past with the other Underworld films.
“I love Interview with a Vampire. I love the understated kind of thing,” James said. “The interesting thing about vampire movies is I always think about the moral complexity of it. You have these vampires that are humanized and you either want to root for them or you don’t. I think they are good guys or morally upstanding but they do kill people. So how do they work that out in their own mind.”
