Arriving this week on DVD and Blu-Ray
This week, Lionsgate Home Entertainment brings Saw: The Final Chapter to DVD, Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray 3D. Shock caught up to Dr. Gordon himself, Cary Elwes, about his return to the franchise.
Shock Till You Drop: After the sixth film had been released, how soon did they approach you to reprise your role as Dr. Gordon?
Cary Elwes: They came fairly quick. They usually think about those movies well in advance and had ideas about the next one. They have to be ahead of the curve to meet their Halloween release dates. I got a call pretty much before six came out, or around that time. They said they wanted to meet about the next film.
Shock: Was the approach to bringing Dr. Gordon back different than what we saw on screen at the time they proposed this idea to you?
Elwes: Well, the fans campaigned heavily to bring Dr. Gordon back. When I was approached by Twisted Pictures around parts three or four, I said to them, call me when you’re ready to do the last one. I think that would be a nice way to cap the series. They agreed.
I thought they did a great job creating a successful franchise and thought whatever plan they had it was going to be intelligent and rewarding. I didn’t have any input and I wanted to be surprised when I read the script. I thought it was smart the way they brought Gordon back, so I was happy to do it.
Shock: Was there any sense of familiarity coming back to the set, even though James Wan wasn’t there for your return?
Elwes: Well, I had a trailer this time, so that was nice. It was obviously a bit more relaxed on the budget this film versus what we had on the first movie. It was nice to see some familiar faces, a lot of fun.
Shock: Tobin Bell and some of the series regulars have their theories on why the series has endured, I’m curious to hear your thoughts?
Elwes: The answer is two-fold. The films are very inventive and I think that’s appealing to the fans. The plots are also intricate and it asks for the audience to think. I guess there’s a third part, too, is that the films play altogether, which is tough to do with a series that lasts this long. They’re one long story. Tobin is also a terrific villain and the fans latched on to all of this with a great deal of passion.
Shock: Did you keep pace with the films as they came out?
Elwes: I saw a few here and there, I was so busy. But I did catch up on them all. Not in one sitting, though. I thought it was very clever that they’re tied together. But I think the films also work on their own. You don’t need to see the other films to get involved in each entry.
Shock: I’m hearing rumors of Saw‘s future as a television series, perhaps thrusting Dr. Gordon back into the spotlight. Can you shed any light on this?
Elwes: I told them I’d be back for the last one and the title for this is “The Final Chapter.” I think all good things have to come to an end and I think this is it.
