After their run in theaters
The Nicolas Cage-starring Season of the Witch and the Strause Bros.’ Skyline (set visit part 1/part 2) are being included in a new deal between Netflix and Relativity in which theatrical films will eschew a run on premium TV channels and head directly to Netflix. Both films are scheduled to hit theaters later this year, says a press release.
Theatrically released films owned by Relativity will be licensed directly and exclusively to Netflix for streaming to its subscribers during the “pay TV window.”
This is the first we’ve heard of anything regarding Skyline‘s release. Season of the Witch, meanwhile, was pulled from a Spring debut and shoved to an undetermined date.
The deal between Netflix and Relativity marks a continued shift in the distribution of major motion pictures in the U.S. Under the agreement, an increasing amount of movies previously encumbered by pay TV agreements with premium channels such as HBO, Showtime and Starz will become available to be streamed from Netflix months â and not years â after their release on DVD.
It will be the first time that studio quality theatrical feature films will be streamed via subscription by Netflix instead of being broadcast by the traditional pay providers, and it opens up a new revenue stream for such movies.
