For the last month, Shock Till You Drop has been hosting a series of homepage polls asking you, dear reader, to vote on the best horror movies of 2009 in three categories. We had our say (see the links above), what did you think were the top titles? The results were both expected and surprising. (Click on each title below for trailers, photos, clips and more.)
Best Theatrical Release
1.) Zombieland
2.) TIE: Friday the 13th / Drag Me to Hell
3.) Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
4.) Last House on the Left
5.) Halloween II
Two of the most controversial films of the year, movies that lit up our comment boards and felt unrelenting vitriol – Friday and Halloween – ultimately have the last laugh. Either there are actual fans, which I’m sure there are (I’m one of them), or the haters are closet fans and don’t want to own up to it. The inclusion of the Underworld prequel puzzles me, however.
Best Indie or Limited Theatrical Release
1.) Paranormal Activity
2.) The Collector
3.) After Dark Horrorfest 3
4.) The House of the Devil
5.) Carriers
The black sheep here? The After Dark line-up. With very little advertising, the eight films to die for got your attention, it appears. I’m happy to see Collector found its fan base and, hopefully, it will increase once it hits DVD in the first quarter of 2010.
Best Direct-to-DVD Release
1.) Trick r treat
2.) Martyrs
3.) Rec
4.) Eden Lake
5.) The Hills Run Red
Anticipation is delicious. The top three titles, preceded by positive word of mouth, faced delays on their trip to DVD and you embraced them with open arms. Meanwhile, fans really warmed up to Dave Parker’s Hills and its killer Babyface.
