Universal Resurrects Steve Niles’ Criminal Macabre

Cal McDonald to see life on the big screen?

Once at MGM, with Bragi Schut scripting, the Steve Niles and Dark Horse comic book series “Criminal Macabre” has found a home where the classic monsters dwell: Universal Pictures.

Variety says Kyle Ward is penning the script now, tackling Niles’ case of Cal McDonald, a pill-poppin’, booze-swillin’ detective immersed in the world of the supernatural. McDonald is one of Niles’ strongest fictional characters to date and has been the center of a number of books and graphic novels. In “Criminal Macabre,” McDonald stumbles upon a scheme in which the monsters of Los Angeles are planning something “big.”

The question now is: Will Universal ask Ward to dilute McDonald’s hard edge? Will he remain a pill-popper or is this going to be pasteurized?

Dark Horse’s Mike Richardson will produce with Neal Moritz and his Original Film.
