Update: Saw Scribes Swim with Piranha

Alex Aja’s remake for Dimension

Update: You’ll find a statement from co-writer Patrick Melton who clears the air.

Look at their track record and you’ll find Alexandre Aja and Grégory Levasseur put their mark on all scripts they direct and/or produce: High Tension. The Hills Have Eyes. P2. This week’s release, Mirrors.

So it struck us as a bit peculiar when word hit the web that Saw sequel and Feast scribes Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton were going to do a draft of Aja’s next feature Piranha 3-D for Dimension Films. While this may have been true at one time, when we reached out to Aja today to see if Dunstan and Melton were still involved, he simply replied, “Not anymore.”

Melton clarifies: “We were hired about a month ago for a two-week production polish. I wouldn’t even classify it as a rewrite, we we’re simply brought in to help out on a few plot points and character details. Nothing big. Those two weeks have come and gone, and now the the project is barreling towards production at the end of September. Alex and Greg have a great vision for this, and it should be a wild, wild ride.”

The director and Levasseur are, themselves, working from a script by Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. This take on Joe Dante’s Piranha will take place against the backdrop of Lake Havasu where Spring Breakers are attacked by prehistoric fish.

Shooting begins this fall.
