Orphanage Writer Talks Homecoming

And why he has decided to direct

Marinating in the phenomenal success The Orphanage is finding in his home country of Spain (it’s well on its way to becoming one of the highest-grossing films there), writer Sergio Sánchez is delicately balancing work on two more projects: Guillermo Del Toro’s 3993 (more on that soon) and The Homecoming.

The latter is an eerie thriller he hopes will launch a directing career. From an earlier announcement issued by production outfit Rodar y Rodar, we learned the story follows a family who returns home from a trip to a world without people. “That’s the first ten, fifteen minutes,” Sánchez elaborates for us. “It’s a family of four – a father, mother, son and daughter – and they go away on holiday to tell the kids that they’re going to get a divorce and everything is going to be okay. Of course, this has a devastating impact on the kids. So, when they come back from their island getaway, there’s no one left [on mainland]. They run out of gas and have to start walking back home and [along the way] they start to encounter things…”

He stops there, already clearly a pro at the journalist/filmmaker rapport and knowing when he’s divulged just enough details.

Sánchez admits he would have loved to have directed The Orphanage, or Del Toro’s 3993, himself, but “I think, finally, with whats happening with The Orphanage, I’m in a position to actually attach myself to a project.”

More from Sanchez and “Orphanage” director Juan Antonio Bayona soon!
