Weinsteins Acquires Waz

UK serial killer thriller heads to video

The brothers Weinstein caged a lot of product at this year’s Cannes Film Festival; they’re almost like the Hollywood equivalent to those danger-seekers you see on the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch.” Earlier in the week they made headlines with their acquisition of Dario Argento’s remastered Suspiria. Today the trades are reporting the Weinstein Company has purchased three more films including Tom Shankland’s UK thriller Waz.

The gimmicky quandary to this one – “would you kill the one you love to save yourself from death?” – sounds vaguely familiar to Scar, except disguised as a detective whodunit rather than a slasher film. Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd (The Exorcist: The Beginning) is joined by Selma Blair (Hellboy) and Melissa George (Turistas) as a detective neck-deep in gangland murders. An equation is being carved into all of the victims and loved ones close to the deceased are brutally tortured and on the verge of suicide. A serial killer is suspected, one who wants SkarsgÃ¥rd to “pay for his previous mistakes.”

Waz will be released via Genius Home Video, the same company who releases the Weinstein’s Hannibal Rising on Tuesday. You can find the offical site for Waz here.
