Robert Redford and Jason Segel Join The Discovery

Academy Award winner Robert Redford and Jason Segel are joining the cast of Charlie McDowell’s The Discovery. The two actors join the previously-announced Academy Award-nominated Rooney Mara in the cast of the film, which begins production in Rhode Island later this month. Segel will replace Nicholas Hoult, who was previously announced but must drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

The Discovery is written by McDowell and Justin Lader, produced by Alex Orlovsky of Verisimilitude and James D. Stern of Endgame Entertainment, and financed by Endgame Entertainment and Protagonist Pictures. Julie Goldstein and Lucas Smith will oversee the project for Endgame. Mike Goodridge, Dimitra Tsingou and Eddie Vaisman are overseeing for Protagonist.

The Discovery is a gripping sci-fi love story set in a world two years after the existence of an afterlife has been scientifically proven; resulting in millions of people taking their own lives, believing that suicide is like pushing a reset button. Segel plays the son of the man responsible for the Discovery (Redford) and Mara plays a woman he falls in love with whose life is tinged by a tragic past.

“I couldn’t be happier to be working with Charlie,” said Stern. “Robert Redford, Jason Segel and Rooney Mara are three exceptionally talented actors and make the project all the more exciting.”

The Discovery is McDowell’s second feature film after the critically-acclaimed The One I Love, starring Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss.
