Sony has announced The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will begin work on an animated Spider-Man movie for release on July 20, 2018. Now, note, that’s a different release date than the July 18, 2017 date already set for the as-yet Untitled Spider-Man Project with Drew Goddard currently attached to direct and is part of Marvel’s expanded Cinematic Universe deal with Disney.
As of now there is no word as to whether or not Lord and Miller will direct, but they will be writing the treatment and producing the film. As for any relation to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the press release says the film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe, all of which are continuing.
