Shia LaBeouf Unfettered: Talking ‘Nymphomaniac’ and How He’s Done with Studio Features

Earlier today The Hollywood Reporter kicked things off with a teaser of their upcoming interview with Lawless star Shia LaBeouf where he discusses his distaste with working in Hollywood starting off with, “I’m done.” He’s done with big budget films, but he’s not done slamming them.

“There’s no room for being a visionary in the studio system. It literally cannot exist,” he told THR‘s Pamela McClintock. “You give Terrence Malick a movie like Transformers, and he’s f–ed. There’s no way for him to exist in that world.”

LaBeouf will focus solely on independent films moving forward, based on his claims, one of which is The Company You Keep for director Robert Redford, which will have its world premiere in Venice followed by a North American premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month. Discussing the film’s financiers, L.A.-based Voltage Pictures, LaBeouf says, “These dudes are a miracle. They give you the money, and they trust you — [unlike the studios, which] give you the money, then get on a plane and come to the set and stick a finger up your ass and chase you around for five months.

Recent Voltage films include The Hurt Locker, The Whistleblower and William Friedkin‘s NC-17-rated Killer Joe.

But while talking about studio execs sticking fingers in the most intimate of areas, LaBeouf doesn’t seem so uninterested in being the one doing the “sticking” as he has signed on for Lars von Trier‘s sexually explicit, English-language double feature Nymphomaniac in which the actors will be asked to perform sexual acts for real and as LaBeouf says in the following interview with MTV, with Lawless co-star Jessica Chastain‘s face getting redder as the interview goes on, “[Sex acts that are] illegal he’ll shoot in blurred images.

When MTV.com’s Josh Horowitz presses on how far LaBeouf is prepared to go he responds, “Whatever is asked.

Von Trier has already made known Nymphomaniac will be presented in both R and NC-17 rated versions and the story follows the erotic adventures of a woman (Charlotte Gainsbourg) from her youth to age 50, as recounted to her husband (Stellan Skarsgard). Nicole Kidman and Willem Dafoe are also currently signed on to star.
