Mini-Review:
I’ll freely admit I have no interest in the Jonas Brothers. Apparently my kids don’t either. My sons say they “are for girls” and my daughter pretends to have no interest in them whatsoever. So our household was pretty much ‘Jonas free’ until this DVD arrived.
But what made me interested in checking it out was the cover. It had a sticker on it showing that it was a Blu-ray 3-D presentation. But the glasses it showed in the ad were not your standard blue and red lens glasses. It showed the grey ones like you use in the theater. I wondered if it was possible to have a full color, theatrical-like 3-D presentation on an HDTV with Blu-ray. I thought Disney had somehow found the key to doing that in a home theater and I was eager to check it out. Imagine my surprise when I opened the case and found four blue and red 3-D glasses. So anyone buying this Blu-ray and thinking they’re going to get new and improved 3-D is going to be very disappointed when they get it home.
So how is the 3-D effect in traditional blue and red? Eh. It’s OK. The waving hands of thousands of adoring tween girls in 3-D is a bit blurry, but there are some effective shots showing the Jonas Brothers on stage in full 3-D. Some shots are definitely better than others. And I have to admit that there are only so many angles they can show the band before the novelty of the 3-D effect wears off. It’s not like a movie where they can keep throwing new things at the screen. This is just guys singing on a stage. But what’s particularly odd is they switch between 2-D and 3-D at random places in the film. It takes a little while to figure out, “Is this supposed to be in 3-D or not?” If it’s a concert scene or something with text on the screen, it’s 3-D. If it’s behind the scenes footage, it’s mostly 2-D. You may find yourself taking the glasses on and off in the scenes between songs.
So how’s the singing to a non-fan? It’s OK. Not bad, but not memorable either. The boys are kind of cheesy, too, as they yell out, “What’s up?” to the shrieking girls or have a contest throwing drumsticks back and forth. You could tell they were really reaching the bottom of the barrel for rock star tricks. Fortunately, they do have some talent as they can sing, they can play the guitar, they can play drums, and they play the piano. There is some legitimate musical talent here and it’s not all Disney fluff. Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift also have good cameos as Disney tried to cultivate their next pop starlets.
This one is for Jonas Brothers fans only. Everyone else, steer clear.
Unfortunately, even Jonas fans may be disappointed by the bonus features. While there is a digital copy of the film and a couple of deleted songs, the only other bonus feature is a brief behind the scenes tour.
