Miramax Announces Potential Sequels from ‘Rounders’ to ‘Shakespeare in Love’

Miramax and The Weinstein Company announced a new agreement today that will see them partner on the production of sequels to some of Miramax’s best-known properties. The first films listed under the agreement are sequels to Bad Santa, Rounders and Shakespeare in Love. But it doesn’t end there.

Other potential projects are film or television projects branching off from Bridget Jones’s Diary, Copland, From Dusk Til Dawn, Swingers, Clerks, Shall We Dance and The Amityville Horror. The two companies have already been working together on the impending releases of Scream 4 (April 15, 2011), Spy Kids 4 (August 19, 2011) and Scary Movie 5. They’ll also be collaborating on new special edition materials for Blu-ray releases of films from Miramax’s back catalogue, which has me thinking the Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair may finally see the light of day.

While most of these projects seem pretty pointless to me, I think a Bad Santa sequel could be pretty fun. It’s a great character, and I wouldn’t mind seeing how he’s grown since the first film. I also suppose the premise from Copland could make for a pretty decent TV show, but aren’t there enough cop shows on TV already?

On the Clerks front, Kevin Smith has been quick to point out the possible complications given that he still owns the Jay and Silent Bob characters. At least it’s good to know that Smith would have to be involved if they ever tried to make a Clerks 3. I mean, they couldn’t make a Clerks movie without Jay and Silent Bob, could they? Without Smith?

Smith even jokes saying, “If they wanna do THAT Jersey Girl sequel, I’m totally in,” referring to a synopsis he tweeted in which “JLo’s dead Mom [busts] out of her earthen grave, trampling her only begotten daughter’s copy of a ‘Necronomicon’ as she eats her brains.” A bit of a diversion from the original, but an idea.
