The Perfect Guy Edges Out The Visit for Top Box Office Spot

The Perfect Guy is No.1 at the box office with $26.7 million

It was a close call, but in the end, Screen Gems’ The Perfect Guy topped the domestic box office with an estimated $26.7 million from 2,221 theaters. Averaging $12,022 per theater, the David M. Rosenthal-directed thriller stars Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy and Morris Chestnut. The film cost just $12 million to make and received an A- CinemaScore, which should mean it will have healthy legs for the upcoming weeks.

Opening in second place was M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit with $25.69 million from 3,069 theaters, an average of $8,370 per theater. The Universal Pictures and Blumhouse release marks the highest-grossing horror opening of 2015 while only carrying a budget of $5 million. The movie received a CinemaScore of B-. Internationally, The Visit added $3.8 million in 14 markets in Europe.

Sony Pictures/Affirm’s faith-based family drama War Room dropped to third place but was still able to bring in another $7.4 million, which is a dip of just 22% from last weekend. War Room has now grossed $39.2 million after three weeks.

Broad Green Pictures release A Walk in the Woods, starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte and Emma Thompson, dropped a spot to fourth with an additional $4.6 million. The comedy adventure has earned $19.87 million after two weeks.

Rounding out the top five was Paramount and Skydance‘s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which grossed $4.15 million for a seven-week total of $188.2 million. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the Tom Cruise-starrer also earned an impressive $86 million in China this weekend to take its international total to $424 million. Made for $150 million, the film has grossed $612.2 million worldwide.

Another big earner over the summer, Universal’s Straight Outta Compton took in an additional $4.09 million to bring its five-week total to $155.7 million domestically. Internationally, the $28-million film has made $25 million for a worldwide total of $180.7 million.

Other notable releases included 90 Minutes in Heaven, which grossed $2.16 million from 878 theaters, Sleeping with Other People, which collected a strong $103,125 from just five theaters, and Meet the Patels, which earned $75,597 from five theaters.
